Duke disconnected my service after 14 years with 0 notice of disconnect. We were out of town for an emergency but had someone coming by the house daily. They let us know it was off. In 14 years with Duke we have NEVER had a disconnection. They slapped us with a 290.00 deposit on our next bill. We did our bill in full like we have done for 14 years and they took our bill towards the deposit. A letter came 2 days AFTER it was disconnected to let us know. We paid within 10 minutes of disconnect when we got the call and called in to see if we could have the deposit reversed as we would not be able to do an extra 290. She said yes and we had to wait until future bill until it posted. . We called in today to what seemed like an overseas operator and she had to transfer me to new Customsr service agent who sounded like she was asleep at her house and said there was nothing she could do to take it off. Despite us being told that when we called in and it's very low down of Duke to charge. Almost 300 deposit after labeling a 14 year old customer who pays faithfully and NEVER had a disconnection in life !!!! To be a 14 year old customer and have that record and refuse to refund it especially since we git the letter 2 days after it was turned off is crazy. The fact the agent couldn't give me info to email or even call is insane. I believe there are special circumstances and shame on Duke for their terrible customer service and lack of training to their agents. A warning of the next time would be considerate. We have never asked for payment arrangements....etc. it's just rude.

Worst power company I’ve ever dealt with. When I lived in a part of Florida with FPL I had a larger home and used more power and my bill was no where near this high. Charging people for “peak” hours? Never had anything like that with FPL and sadly there is no other option for pinellas county they have a monopoly on the entire county outside of TECO which is equally just as bad for rates and high fees. Hopefully our local government will act soon and stop this from continuing.

In October 2025, a Duke Energy truck struck my vehicle at an intersection, damaging my driver-side mirror. The driver did not realize he had made contact and initially left the scene. I followed the truck until it stopped and law enforcement was called. When a Duke Energy supervisor arrived, he looked at my vehicle but immediately insinuated that I was lying solely because there was no visible damage on the Duke Energy truck. No consideration was given to the size of the vehicle or how contact could occur without visible markings. What was especially disturbing was that the supervisor then had a private conversation with the responding officer. After that conversation, the officer adopted the same position — that I was not being truthful — without conducting a meaningful or independent investigation. As a woman standing alone, I found myself facing three men — the driver, the supervisor, and the officer — all dismissing my account. It was intimidating, deeply unsettling, and left me feeling powerless. I do not believe I would have been treated the same way had I been a man. There is a business at the intersection, 16th St N & 22nd Ave N, with exterior surveillance cameras that could have confirmed what happened. No effort was made by Duke Energy to pursue this evidence. I have since tried repeatedly to obtain the footage myself. I initially wanted to let this go, but being automatically dismissed and not believed — particularly as a woman — is something I cannot ignore. I am now paying out of pocket for damage I did not cause. I am sharing this so others are aware of how situations like this may be handled and the overt misogyny I experienced.

Duke Energy makes me want to jump off a bridge rather than deal / pay my hard working money to their corporation. That is said from the very bottom of my heart ❤️

I would vote you 0 Stars if I could! You are a scam! Liars and cheating on your customers. In the end I won! You lost! When I was traveling and not at my house for several month you charged me $ 100/month when almost no electricity was used. The second time next year, same story. I started to complain up to your highest positions. I got only excuses and standard replies. I provided you proof and wanted an investigation! Soon after my bill dropped to $ 30 to 50 while I was back at my house using A/C, laundry, TV, light, and everything else all people do. How is this possible? I never got an explanation besides that I must have opened a can of worms on you! PEOPLE complain, bombard them and fight for honesty and professionalism! The other comments just confirm how bad DUKE is! They need to be sued!

I don’t dread anything more than dealing with Duke Energy. Every single other energy company I work with is wonderful, helpful and makes genuine efforts to serve you to the best of their ability. Duke doesn’t care about their customers time, energy or money. Customer service is a joke and waste of time along with the online portal. I hope a local company will take over all your service areas. It couldn’t happen fast enough.

Duke Energy’s billing practices have been frustrating, and the recent price hike feels unfair, especially considering everything we’ve been through as a state. With the rising cost of living, an increase in energy rates only adds to the financial strain on families and businesses. Transparency in billing has also been an issue, making it difficult to understand the charges. Customers deserve better communication and fairer pricing, particularly during challenging times. It’s disappointing to see yet another rate increase when so many are already struggling. Duke Energy needs to do more to support its customers, not add to their burden.

UPDATE:::: I would like to say I am updating my review. It took a lot of calls and emails, but Duke ended up helping out in the end. They also are assisting in checking everything is working right and checking that prices are correct. They have restored service and just in time the heat was causing a huge increase in our son's seizures. I would like to see a plan in place or even assist in developing a plan for individuals with a medical condition that could be life threatening and for individuals with Autism and let's not forget the elderly rather then the plan they offer which is only if you are hooked up to a breathing machine. So thank you duke so much for proving you as a company do care about your customers and there voice. I know that means a lot to my family and I'm sure people reading this it will mean a lot to them. My family cannot thank you enough and we really appreciate what you have done. Listen don't let Duke Energy fool you. They say they have share the light fund and they work with their customers. That is partially true. Yes they have share the light fund they do give a lot to. select agencies. However, these agencies run out of funds so quickly. They charge a high rate and if you are on a fixed income and even with a dr.s letter stating disabilities and or including minor children and or terminal family members they don't care. If you use up your extension or if you set up a payment plan and can't follow through because you only get paid once a month or you can't come up with the full amount They won't work with you. Even when the agencies are out of funds they don't care won't work with you. Absolutely terrible company. Stay away if you can unfortunately I am stuck only with them in my area. My one son is terminal heat is a trigger for seizures, disruption in his routine in a trigger being autistic and non verbal. He has a pacemaker and suffers from blue tonic seizures where he stops breathing. Duke has nothing in place to protect these individuals. Do we sue? Do we bring it to Washington? It's ridiculous and no offense they outsource where the hardworking individuals can't assist us because they are only allowed to do so much on there no but then they do try their to assist but can only do so much on their end. And when you ask to speak to someone that might be able to offer us other types of assistance or come up with a different solution they can't transfer you or give you contact information so you can reach out to somebody else. I am volunteer with no pay just to assist other families or individuals with coming up soon with the solution for finding other assistance that you may not know is provided in the area so the families are individuals that are struggling other options.

ZERO. My bank account was frozen due to fraudulent activity, so Duke didn't get their payment. Then, I call to pay my bill with my checking account and they won't accept a check. Really? First time I've tried to pay a bill, but they wont accept it. It's time to make a change. DUKE is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

Do NOT use Duke. They will trash your credit score for no reason at all. They are claiming I still have an outstanding bill with them and I have proof that I have paid it. And whenever I call them they tell me my account is a $0 balance. I am sick of the games they play. They are telling collections I still owe something but then tell me I owe nothing! Get it right Duke. Do yourself a favor and save your credit score. This has destroyed my credit score and for a bill that was paid over a year ago!

I have been completely scammed by Duke Energy. I recently made the mistake of signing up for the shared solar program, which in itself was incredibly confusing to navigate. There's no department phone line for shared solar, so the only way to get information was speaking with people from other departments in Duke, who were not experts, but who came to the same conclusion as I did, that you could help support clean energy and perhaps save a few dollars on your bill. Well I was so wrong. For the past few months, I've been getting charged $100 extra a month for shared solar fees. Nothing else has changed on my bill. I'm just giving Duke extra of my hard earned money for the hell of it. I've been calling for over a month, trying to cancel my shared solar subscription and to see about reimbursement. Nobody ever seems to know how to help and since there's no phone line for that department, all they can do is give me an email address, to which no one responds to after emailing for over a month. Finally I spoke to someone today, asking why on earth anyone would pay for shared solar and see nothing in return, and they said "well that's the program". I begged them to please just tell me, is there any benefit to being on shared solar. Their answer, to my shock, was that there was no benefit and that employees from Duke even raised these concerns when the program was established. So there you have it, DUKE just scammed me out of my own money. I feel so taken advantage of and I hope nobody makes this same mistake.

I have been a Duke Energy customer for over 25 years and have always paid my monthly bill on time. Approximately 2 years ago, they stopped sending me a printed bill but rather sent me my bill as a text message on my phone. Because I didn't receive any message from them for February, March and April, they threatened me with a shut off. Suddenly they decided to send me a text message informing me of the shut off. Because of their incompetence, they charged me $5.00 for a late fee which I refuse to pay. I sent them exactly what I owe for those months.

I feel like you guys come up with your bill amounts out of thin air. Paid nearly 400 the last two months, even passed due and am being charged $150 disconnect fee (electricity hasn't been disconnected and the woman on the phone I'm speaking with RN has had 15+ minutes to explain and is still reviewing my account. If I had another option for energy service, I'd definitely not be a customer. You guys are insanely expensive, especially charging me with 2 back to back $150 late fees. I can't wait to be able to take my money else where.

Worst electric company in the country. Do NOT deal with them if you have a choice. Hopefully they are kicked out of FL.

I really love it how Duke Energy constantly raises their rates and then gaslights you by sending you emails giving you suggestions on how to lower your bills. I have been using the same amount of electricity over the last four years but my bill has gone from ~$80 to ~$150. In fact I have used less electricity. My AC is set on 84 now and it was 80 before. I keep my house 4 degrees warmer but my power bill is higher. All my bulbs are LED, I have blackout curtains on all my windows and live pretty much in the dark, only the lights of my TV and small LED string lights giving a slight glow so it isn't pitch black but my bill creeps up and up.

Worst red tape outfit I ever dealt with! When you have already been proving for YEARS to have provided automated bank withdrawal for payment, from the SAME ACCOUNT, why do they need to put a good customer through the hassle of having to do a temporary credit freeze lift? All for a name change ONLY! No change in service address or property’s owner or bank account number. They also accepted one out of the 3 credit bureaus ONLY and for WHAT!!? ALL that should have mattered was the sure source of payment, which has been the same from the time they took over the previous Electric Company. They created a whole new account and they better not charge me twice in the process of doing so. Went through an almost identical ordeal a couple of years ago after my husband died. All I wanted was change of first name on the account. No, they had to create new account, added hook up charge and threatened to cut off electricity if they could not get access to my credit. At that time I refused to lift my credit freeze and a friend provided all of HIS info. Didn’t matter that the payments continued from the same o same o bank account! That is when they took the account out of my name and to a person never having lived in my home. At least this time, the woman who simply followed their bureaucratic requirements, was VERY nice.

Duke energy is trying to bill me for $525 I already paid. I have spent at least 12 hours on the phone with them over the course of at lease 8 phone calls. Every time I am promised a different solution and every time it never gets fixed. No one can seem to figure out how to take the 5 months of erroneous bills off my account that they mistakenly put on there. I am being charged for their lack of competence. Absolute ridiculousness.

The line people helping out with Milton damage are saints and I appreciate every one of them. The company, however, mysteriously starts to have data issues once a large scale outage happens and you’re just left with no way to know your status, if there are trucks in your neighborhood and really just hope that power returns while you’re sitting in your hot house.
